The Press
Zhejiang press develops fast. It publishes 70 newspapers and 218 periodicals. The Zhejiang Daily Group, the Hangzhou Daily Group, the Ningbo Daily Group and the Wenzhou Daily Group have been set up. The Zhejiang Daily Group owns 16 newspapers and 3 periodicals. The Hangzhou Daily Group publishes 7 newspapers and 3 periodicals. The Ningbo Daily Group now operates 7 newspapers and 2 periodicals, and the Wenzhou Daily Group operates 4 newspapers and 1 periodical.
Radio and Television Broadcasting
In the province there are 83 radio and TV establishments in operation, producing and broadcasting 215 programs everyday. The Zhejiang Radio and TV Group, the Hangzhou Radio and TV Group and the Ningbo Radio and TV Group have been established. Zhejiang is covered by a high quality radio and television network mainly based on satellites and optical cables, and is linked up by an optical cable network of TV and broadcasting transmission. Cable TV network has covered all the towns and villages. At the end of 2006, the number of subscribers of cable television is about 9.5 million, nearly 63 percent of total households in the province. Digital cable television is in operation in all the 11 cities under the provincial administration, with about 1.3 million subscribers. Radio broadcasting reached out to 98.4 percent of the population in the province, while that of TV coverage reached 98.8 percent of thatWith radio, television, and film as the main business, Zhejiang Radio and TV Group is engaged in various kinds of media operations and related commercial industries. With its International Channel open to broadcast in August 2006, the group holds seven radio channels, and ten TV channels, and airs more than 400 hours of programs everyday. Programs produced by the group are aired in North America, Europe, Australia, and Asia. The group maintains exchange programs and friendly relations with TV and radio stations in dozens of countries and regions.
The Publishing Industry
There are thirteen book publishers and 4 audio-visual and electronic publishing houses in the province. Books published in Zhejiang are well received and have won numerous prizes in the country.Zhejiang United Publishing Group, the leader of the publishing business in the province, is composed of nine specialized publishing houses and two sub-groups in addition to several shareholding companies and holding subsidiaries. The nine publishing houses are Zhejiang People's Publishing House, Zhejiang People's Fine Arts Publishing House, Zhejiang Science and Technology Publishing House, Zhejiang Literature and Art Publishing House, Zhejiang Juvenile and Children's Book Publishing House, Zhejiang Education Publishing House, Zhejiang Ancient Books Publishing House, Zhejiang Photography Publishing House and Zhejiang Electronic Publishing House. The two wholly-owned sub-groups are Zhejiang Xinhua Distribution Group and Zhejiang Printing Group. The publishing group boasts advanced printing equipment and a distribution network covering the entire province. Xinhua Book Store, after realizing chain operation in the province, has extended its business through opening eleven chain stores outside Zhejiang. In 2006, the group published 5,250 titles of books in 250 million copies.
New Media
A provincial system of news release on the Internet has been primarily established. It is headed by the key provincial news websites or homepages and composed of municipal and county news websites or homepages, and plays an active commercial role. At present, there are 70 Internet media in the province. Zhejiang Online (www.zjol.com.cn) is a provincial key news website with over 40 channels and sub-sites. It has editions in traditional Chinese, English and Japanese, in addition to the simplified Chinese edition. Till December 2006, its highest daily number of visits has reached five million.
Others
In addition, more than a hundred national media organizations have set up correspondent stations or offices in Zhejiang, including the People's Daily, Xinhua News Agency, China Daily, Guangming Daily and Economic Daily. Besides, media from Hong Kong, including the Ta Kung Pao, Wen Wei Po, Hong Kong Commercial Daily and Economic Reporter also have their correspondents stationed in the province.
