Overview of Zhejiang Province
Situated in the south of Yangtze River Delta area in China, Zhejiang was named after the Qiangtang River, the biggest river in the province, which is also called “Zhe River”, meaning literally “a zigzag river”. Zhejiang has 2 deputy provincial cities and 9 municipalities under its direct jurisdiction and covers a land area of 101.8 square kilometers and a total population of 54.98 million of permanent residents.
Zhejiang enjoys profound history and splendid culture. As one of the important origins of Chinese civilization, it had ancient people living and prospering here as early as 100,000 years ago. Shangshan Culture Relics, Kuahuqiao Culture Relics, Hemudu Culture Relics and Liangzhu Culture Relics are the most famous ones among over 1000 historic relics of the Neolithic Age found here. More than 1000 native Zhejiang writers were written into history accounting for one-sixth of the national total. Among all the academicians (or academic members) of the Chinese Academy of Science and the Chinese Academy of Engineering since the founding of China, almost one-fifth are from Zhejiang.
Zhejiang boasts picturesque sceneries and beautiful ecological environment. Nature and culture are intertwined perfectly in Zhejiang, rewarding the province with a long standing reputation as “a land of fish and rice, home to silk and tea, a place of rich cultural heritage and a tourist paradise”. In 2013, the GDP of the entire province reached 3756.8 billion yuan, ranking 4th nationwide, with the per capita of 68,462 yuan (about 11,055 dollars), and ranking 5th nationwide. With the rate of its three industries of 4.8:49.1:46.1, Zhejiang has generally entered mid and late phase of industrialization, basically realizing the goal of building a well-off society benefiting all people of Zhejiang province. The private economies sector in Zhejiang is active with a developed commodity market. Among the World Top 500, 154 are doing business in Zhejiang.
